There is a unique subset of skilled trade workers all around Australia that might not have the same opportunities as their co-workers, despite working in the same fields and earning the living. What sets these particular workers apart is that they don’t actually have certifications that correspond to their skills, despite having potentially worked or decades in their field. This means that these often highly qualified workers are, on paper, unqualified. There’s good news for workers like these, however. Workers who have worked for decades in their industry of choice shouldn’t have to then jump through hoops to gain trade recognition. If an individual already has the practical experience, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) represents the simplest, fastest and cost-effective way to go about getting a certification. Rather than having to spend tens of thousands of dollars and years of time that could be better spent working, RPL gives skilled workers the opportunity to formalise their considerable experience.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Introduced by the government in the 1990s, Recognition of Prior Learning allows applicants to bypass unneeded modes of study and instead recognises skills and knowledge developed through experience. In recognising these skills, the RPL has made is easier for Australians to achieve formal recognition through the issuing of Nationally Recognised Qualifications. For those unsure whether they qualify for RPL, there is a handy online tool available to help you decide whether you should apply.

What does the trade recognition process involve?

As eligibility requirements are completely dependent on the qualifications being pursued by applicants, applications for trade recognition are considered on a case by case basis. Minimum criteria for trade recognition is usually a Certificate III – as RPL qualifications are issued from Certificate III and above, RPL can make this process significantly easier. It should be noted that achieving trade recognition through RPL does not replace apprenticeships and relevant training courses, but instead is a way for workers already skilled in their trade to be granted certification. It is instead the recognition of extensive experience that makes RPL so valuable to already skilled workers.
