For many people this pause in business as usual highlighted a desire for a different kind of lifestyle, and a different kind of career.
If you’re in this position it can be pretty intimidating to know where to start and how to make the move into a new job; especially if you need to be certified in your chosen area. The good and bad news is a career change probably won’t happen overnight, so you can take your time to set yourself up for success. Here’s how you can use RPL to start the process and achieve the career change you’re dreaming of.
First, figure out where you want to go and what you need to get there.
Yes, obvious start, we know. But you do need to have more than a vague understanding of what you’ll need in your new path. Start by narrowing down the field you’re interested in and exploring what general roles and certifications are available in that space. If you already know what specific role you want, do some research on job sites to see what employers are looking for in terms of skills, experience and certifications.
It’s also a great idea to get in contact with some businesses or organisations in the industry and ask what kinds of paths are available for people wishing to make a career change into their relevant industry.
Identify your transferable skills and experience.
Once you know what skills and experience, you’ll likely need for your target role, do a self-assessment to see where your existing roles and experience can be transferred. Common transferable skills include:
- Soft skills: communication, interpersonal skills, time management
- Problem Solving
- Leadership
- Critical thinking
- Teamwork
- Administration & writing
- Project Management
- Relationship building
- Team Management
- Workplace Safety
