Carpentry is one of the most sought after trades. It’s needed everywhere in our daily lives and plays an important role in construction projects. Trade licenced carpenters are always in high demand across a variety of industries.

Having professional qualifications in carpentry and joinery will help you stand out from other applicants.

Here are some potential career paths for qualified carpenters:

Residential Construction

This is one of the most popular career paths for a qualified carpenter. Residential carpenters are responsible for building and installing frameworks, walls, roofs, and other structural elements in homes. You’ll work with blueprints and building codes to ensure that your work meets the necessary safety standards. Residential carpenters typically work on new builds, renovations or home repairs.

Commercial Construction

Qualified carpenters are also in high demand in the commercial construction industry. In this role, you could be responsible for constructing buildings such as offices, schools, hospitals, and other commercial structures.

Furniture Making

If you have a passion for woodworking and design, a career in furniture making can be a very rewarding career. As a furniture maker, you can make the most of your artistic flair by creating beautiful and functional pieces of furniture, such as tables, chairs, and cabinets. You’ll work with a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and upholstery fabrics..

Boatbuilding

Love everything to do with fishing or being out on the water?  As a boat builder you can use your carpentry skills to construct and repair boats and ships. You’ll work with a variety of materials, including wood, fibreglass, and metal. Boatbuilding requires a high level of skill and attention to detail, as even the smallest mistake can have serious consequences out on the water.

Set Building

If you like the idea of being part of something truly creative, you could work as a set builder. In this role, you’ll create sets for movies, TV shows, and theatrical productions. You’ll work with designers and directors to bring their visions to life, building everything from elaborate castles to simple street scenes. Set building requires excellent carpentry skills, as well as the ability to work under tight deadlines.

What you need to become a qualified carpenter

To apply for a carpentry and joinery trades licence, you’ll need formal qualifications, such as the Certificate III in Carpentry – CPC30220 awarded by Construction Trades College (RTO: 40250). This nationally recognised certificate demonstrates that you have the essential skills and formal qualifications suitable for residential and commercial construction work.

Get your skills certified through RPL

If you have the skills but lack carpentry qualifications, you can get recognition for your experience through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL is a process that enables you to have your skills and experience recognised by a registered training organisation (RTO). With the help of Skills Certified, you can fast-track your qualifications, so that your skills can be converted into an Australian qualification.

The Certificate III in Carpentry – CPC30220 RPL assessment program helps people with extensive carpentry experience, attain the required units to receive a nationally recognised qualification and apply for a carpentry contractor’s licence.

This program is open to local carpenters with years of experience, or local students who have completed partial qualifications. Migrants can make use of our fast-track programs that convert relevant overseas qualifications and experience into nationally recognised qualifications, provided they are well-versed in Australian requirements and standards.

Skills Certified will help you through the entire RPL process.  We’ll check your skills to see what you’re eligible for, and match you with one of our partner Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). They will discuss your skills and experience to match them with the requirements for a particular trade or profession.  We’ll provide you with guidance on which documents the RTOs required to support your application.  We’ll even help you submit all the necessary evidence to the relevant RTOs and manage the entire process until you obtain your nationally accredited qualifications.
